The Nairobi Neighborhoods Worth Knowing

A short, candid reading of where established residents settle — and what each area asks of you in return.

Nairobi rewards specificity. The question is never whether an area is good, but whether it fits a particular routine: proximity to a school, a hospital, an office, an airport road that behaves at seven in the morning.

Karen and Runda trade density for space and quiet, and ask for a longer commute in return. Westlands and Riverside compress everything into walking distance and accept the noise that comes with it. Lavington and Kileleshwa sit between the two, and turn over faster.

Security posture varies less by postcode than by property. Perimeter, lighting, access control and the quality of the management company matter more than the address on the lease.

The honest advice is to spend a week living the intended routine before signing anything longer than a year.
